Shakespeare

Most of us have heard of a man named William Shakespeare, but what do most of us know? Most people know his most famous work, such as Hamlet, Macbeth and of course Romeo and Juliet. When he was writing plays there wasn’t the structure to the English language that there is today, Shakespeare helped shape the modern day English language. Not much is know about his private life which leads to much speculation. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language.

He was born in an English town called Stratford-Upon-Avon. It has been widely thought that some of the works attributed to him were really written by others. Shakespeare was originally a comedy writer; he then went on to write tragedies, then tragicomedies (also known as romances). He was liked as a writer in his day but he didn’t reach the success that he is today until after he died. In the 19th century, the romantics thought of William as a genius and the Victorians hero worshipped him. In the 20th century his worked was repeatedly adopted and remade by scholars and movie makers alike. There are many missing years in the history of Shakespeare. He resurfaced in London, it is said he was running away from prosecution of deer poaching! He was married to an older woman, but it is unknown how faithful he was. There is much evidence in his plays of infidelity with various women, or may even the love of a young boy. These facts are widely argued by many fans and critics.
